In clay pellets or a fine mix, an Alocasia on a reservoir is one of the easier plants in the house, because the thing it hates most is drying to the corm between drinks. In a chunky bark aroid mix a wick does nothing: the mix sits dry above a full reservoir and the plant thirsts on top of its own water. A cactus root drinks hard for a day and then wants to be dry. A reservoir keeps the bottom of the pot wet for weeks, and a root that cannot get air below the waterline rots from the base up, usually without a single warning sign above the soil. The pot is drawn as a run for it to walk along, not as a circle to sit in. A Cattleya is an epiphyte. Its roots are covered in a spongy layer that takes up water in seconds and then needs to be back in air. Held wet, those roots go brown and hollow and the plant lives on its pseudobulbs until they run out. Every orchid pot we draw is mostly opening. - [Hoya. Almost everything we would sell you here is a support rather than a bigger pot. A Hoya is a semi-succulent epiphyte. In the wild its roots are in leaf litter in the fork of a tree, wet for an hour and then dry and airy. A reservoir gives it the opposite of that for weeks on end, and the first sign is usually a whole vine going limp at once. - [Plants. Almost every Monstera in a Yerevan flat is in a chunky bark and perlite mix, and a chunky mix does not wick: the reservoir stays full and the root ball stays dry. Grow one in clay pellets or a finer mix and a reservoir is fine. In the mix you have, the pot needs a hole. - [Pothos.
